Online Travel Agencies Experience Relief Rally After OpenAI's Shift
  • AI Strategic Shift: OpenAI's decision to pause its ambitions for direct travel bookings alleviates investor fears that generative AI could disrupt traditional travel platforms, creating a rebound opportunity for online travel agencies.
  • Real-Time Data Challenges: Industry observers note that managing real-time pricing and inventory for travel is technically challenging, indicating that OpenAI still needs to rely on traditional intermediaries for complex global logistics.

BofA analyst Nafeesa Gupta lowered the firm's price target on TripAdvisor to $14 from $17 and keeps a Neutral rating on the shares. Noting that activist investor Starboard Value has intensified its campaign at Tripadvisor with a public letter announcing plans to nominate a majority slate for the 2026 AGM, the firm believes a more assertive, value-oriented board could strengthen execution discipline and help accelerate shareholder value creation, but lowers its price target based on sum-of-the-parts valuation for the core business, Viator and TheFork.

B. Riley lowered the firm's price target on TripAdvisor to $13 from $18 and keeps a Neutral rating on the shares. TripAdvisor's legacy Hotel & Other segment faces ongoing secular pressures, while Experiences GBV grows double-digit but lags competitor GetYourGuide, leaving uncertainty around narrowing the gap, the analyst tells investors in a research note. Management's review of TheFork for a potential $380M sale is positive, though a possible proxy fight with activist Starboard Value could create near-term distractions, the analyst tells investors in a research note.
