Barclays Initiates Overweight Rating on Algonquin Power

  • Earnings Guidance Adjustment: Algonquin lowered its FY 2027 earnings guidance during its Q4 earnings call, primarily due to previously conservative tax assumptions and temporary gas safety measures, indicating transparency in its strategic adjustments rather than a decline in regulatory earnings power.

CIBC raised the firm's price target on Algonquin Power to $6.50 from $6.25 and keeps a Neutral rating on the shares. The firm said in a Q1 Power & Utilities preview that it believes most Regulated Utilities should meet or exceed consensus in Q1, but it expects more mixed results for Power. CIBC sees "more valuation upside" in Power but believes investors "should hold a balance of Power names and Regulated Utilities."

Barclays analyst Michael Lonegan initiated coverage of Algonquin Power with an Overweight rating and $7 price target. The stock in premarket trading is up 1% to $6.21. Algonquin is a "cheap compelling turnaround story" in the Canadian utilities group, the analyst tells investors in a research note. The firm says the stock's valuation is in line with its historical average despite the company's "materially" improved balance sheet and refocused pure-play regulated strategy. Following the sale of its non-regulated renewables business, Algonquin is now mostly a diversified regulated electric, gas, and water utility with exposure across 16 jurisdictions, contends Barclays.
