Spirit Airlines Shutdown Results in 17,000 Job Losses
The shutdown of Spirit Airlines (FLYY) resulted in the loss of 17,000 jobs and disrupted the plans of tens of thousands of travelers, but experts say it is not yet clear whether the company's absence will have a significant impact on the industry, travelers, or the U.S. economy, Niraj Chokshi of The New York Times reports. Airlines will likely have an easier time raising fares and many will absorbs Spirit's assets in airports, but the effect may not be huge, since Spirit shrunk a lot recently and was in its second bankruptcy in two years. Publicly traded companies in the airline space include Alaska Air (ALK), American Airlines (AAL), Delta Air Lines (DAL), Frontier Group (ULCC), JetBlue (JBLU), Southwest (LUV), Sun Country Airlines (SNCY) and United Airlines (UAL).

Allegiant Travel Expands Board to 11 Members
Allegiant Travel (ALGT) announced the anticipated structure of its Board of Directors following the acquisition of Sun Country Airlines (SNCY). Upon closing, the Allegiant Board will expand from eight to eleven members with Jude Bricker, Jennifer Vogel and Thomas Kennedy, all current Sun Country Board members, to join Allegiant's Board at that time.

Allegiant Travel and Sun Country Airlines Approved by DOT
Allegiant Travel (ALGT) and Sun Country Airlines (SNCY) "announced that the U.S. Department of Transportation has approved the joint interim exemption application of their respective airline subsidiaries that will allow both airlines to continue operating as separate carriers under common ownership after closing, pending further action by the DOT. This milestone marks a significant step toward completing Allegiant's previously announced proposed acquisition of Sun Country. Under the terms of the approval, following the closing of the proposed transaction, Allegiant and Sun Country will continue to operate independently, preserving their unique business models, route networks, and customer experiences while advancing toward a single operating certificate. The companies believe this structure will enable both airlines to continue delivering value to customers, employees, and stakeholders while ensuring operational continuity."
