Citi initiated coverage of Lear with a Buy rating and $123 price target. The analyst rolled out coverage of the auto manufacturers and auto parts and equipment group, saying uncertainty from the tariff wars will likely lead to volatility in U.S. light vehicle sales until there is resolution. In the near-term, March sales were stronger than expected and showroom momentum has continued in April, the analyst tells investors in a research note. Citi believes that when the tariff "fog" clears, underlying demographic trends in the U.S. should support trend demand of 16M-18M car units annually, or about 10% higher than the 2024 total, and that inventory levels will need to be replenished, providing a production tailwind. Both trends are positive for the financial performance of the auto sector, the firm contends. Citi thinks dealers are the best positioned to "absorb the uncertainty."

Barclays lowered the firm's price target on Lear to $85 from $115 and keeps an Equal Weight rating on the shares. The firm reduced estimates in the autos and mobility group to reflect the earnings impacts from tariffs. Barclays also downgrade its industry view on the sector to Negative. A "highly challenging environment" makes a near-term investment case for the autos sector is "increasingly difficult," the analyst tells investors in a research note. The firm sees multiple near-term pressures, including earnings pressure, risks to consumer health, and a cloud over auto tech investment. "Auto tariffs are seemingly here to stay, and valuations are seemingly not pricing in full tariff risk," contends Barclays.

Goldman Sachs downgraded Lear to Neutral from Buy with a price target of $84, down from $117. The firm believes tariffs and slower macroeconomic conditions will create challenges, especially for the Western car makers, many of which are important customers for Lear. More muted growth and reduced new product launches have recently hampered the company's ability to outgrow the market, the analyst tells investors in a research note.

UBS lowered the firm's price target on Lear to $83 from $102 and keeps a Neutral rating on the shares. New trade policies are raising the cost to make a vehicle, leading to increased consumer prices and negatively impacting demand, while production disruptions are likely, financially challenging suppliers, the analyst tells investors in a research note. Supply chains that were set up to be optimized over decades may need to be reimagined, potentially creating calls on capital not anticipated prior, the firm says, adding that Autos is not a sector that deals well with uncertainty given long planning cycles.

Morgan Stanley lowered the firm's price target on Lear to $125 from $135 and keeps an Overweight rating on the shares. U.S. auto supplier results were "neutral to positive" in Q4, but weak 2025 outlooks largely weighed on stock reactions, notes the analyst, who adds that valuations in the group are near multi-year lows, but "for good reason." Share shifts among automakers, trade policy, and a potentially weakening consumer "add further risks to 2025 outlooks," the analyst tells investors in an earnings recap note on the auto supplier group.
