Alibaba's Qwen AI Head Resigns Amid Growth Surge
Leadership Changes at Alibaba's Qwen AI Division
Lin Junyang, the head of Alibaba's Qwen artificial intelligence (AI) division, has announced his resignation, marking a significant leadership shift within the company. Lin made the announcement via a post on X, stating, "Bye beloved Qwen," without elaborating on the reasons for his departure. His resignation follows the rollout of updated AI products by Qwen, which underscores the timing of this leadership change.
This departure is not isolated. Earlier this year, other key team members from the Qwen division also exited the company. Yu Bowen, who was responsible for post-training processes at Qwen, stepped down recently, as reported by Chinese media outlet LatePost. Additionally, Hui Binyuan, a staff research scientist focusing on coding advancements within Qwen, left the company in January. These departures highlight a notable wave of leadership turnover within Alibaba's AI operations, which could have strategic implications for its future initiatives.
Qwen's Recent Performance and Product Updates
Qwen's mobile application has demonstrated impressive user growth, with monthly active users surging from 31.05 million in January to 203 million in February, according to data from AICPB.com. This surge places Qwen's app as a strong contender in the AI market, ranking behind OpenAI's ChatGPT and ByteDance's Doubao app globally. The rapid growth is attributed to aggressive campaigns launched by Chinese tech giants during the Lunar New Year holidays to attract users.
In addition to user growth, Qwen has been active on the product development front. The division has launched multiple new AI models, including lightweight, open-source Qwen 3.5 models with parameters ranging from 0.6 billion to 9 billion. These models are designed for on-device AI applications, showcasing advancements in multimodal capabilities and efficiency. Since 2023, Alibaba has released over 400 open-source Qwen models, which have been downloaded over 1 billion times globally. These product updates have drawn attention, including praise from Elon Musk, who highlighted the "impressive intelligence density" of Qwen's models. This combination of user growth and technological innovation underscores the division's ongoing impact on the AI industry.
