Democratic Lawmakers Plan to Break Up U.S. Meatpacking Companies
Democratic lawmakers are preparing legislation that would break up U.S. meatpacking companies, escalating government efforts to curb record-high beef prices, The Wall Street Journal's Patrick Thomas reports. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer plans to introduce in the coming days a bill that would prevent companies from processing more than one type of meat, and could require major processors to spin off beef plants, according to a summary circulated among lawmakers. The legislation would also call for a review of foreign-owned meat companies. That could include meatpacking powerhouse JBS and pork processing giant Smithfield Foods, which is majority owned by Hong Kong-based company WH Group.

Smithfield Foods Initiates Approval for New Meat Processing Facility in South Dakota
Smithfield Foods announced it has initiated the approval process to build a new state-of-the-art packaged meats and fresh pork processing facility in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The new facility, which is subject to permitting and other regulatory and design approvals, will be built in Foundation Park, a 1,000+-acre heavy industrial park located in northwest Sioux Falls, and will replace Smithfield's existing plant. The company currently employs 3,200 people in Sioux Falls, providing $200M in wages annually, and supports thousands of indirect jobs in agriculture and other sectors.
