ABB and HDF Energy Partner to Develop Marine Fuel Cells
Joint Development Agreement: ABB and HDF Energy have signed a joint development agreement to co-develop a high-power hydrogen fuel cell system for marine vessels, following a previous memorandum of understanding in 2020.
Project Timeline: The partners plan to pilot the fuel cell unit between 2028 and 2029, with serial production expected to start in 2030, aiming to reduce emissions in the shipping industry.
Technological Contributions: HDF Energy will provide the fuel cell technology, while ABB will contribute power converters and integration systems, enhancing the operational range and flexibility of hybrid power systems on vessels.
Decarbonization Goals: The fuel cell unit aims to support maritime decarbonization by enabling hydrogen-electric vessels and serving as an auxiliary power source in ports, particularly where local grid capacity is limited.
