The New York Times Sues U.S. Defense Department Over New Policy Restricting Press Access
The New York Times has sued the U.S. Department of Defense, alleging that a new Pentagon policy requiring reporters to be escorted at all times while inside the building violates the First Amendment and unlawfully restricts press access to military officials and facilities, Erik Wemple reports. The New York Times argues that the Pentagon's March escort policy is unconstitutional because it forces reporters to schedule appointments, wait for escorts, ask questions under supervision, and then leave, creating unreasonable burdens on newsgathering, and the lawsuit seeks a court order requiring the Defense Department to rescind the restrictions.
