Screening Filters

1. price_change_pct ≥ 0

   • Purpose: Include only stocks that are up (have gained) in price today.
   • Rationale:
     • The user asked for “top 3 gainers,” which by definition must have a positive price change for the day.
     • Setting price_change_pct with a minimum of 0 removes all stocks that are flat or down, leaving only gainers.
     • From this filtered universe of gainers, the system can then rank by price_change_pct in descending order and select the top 3.

2. list_exchange: XNYS, XNAS, XASE

   • Purpose: Restrict results to major U.S. stock exchanges:
     • XNYS = NYSE
     • XNAS = NASDAQ
     • XASE = NYSE American (formerly AMEX)
   • Rationale:
     • The user specifically asked about the US stock market.
     • These three exchanges cover the vast majority of U.S.-listed common stocks and are the primary venues used when people refer to “the US stock market.”
     • This filter avoids including foreign exchanges, OTC/pink sheet listings, or non-U.S. markets that would not match the user’s intent.

Why Results Match:

• The exchange filters ensure we only look at stocks from the main U.S. markets, aligning with “in the US stock market.”
• The price_change_pct ≥ 0 filter ensures we’re only considering gainers, which is necessary before identifying the top gainers.
• While the filters themselves do not specify “top 3” (that’s handled by sorting and then taking the first three results), they create the correct universe: U.S.-listed stocks that are up today, from which the system can identify the top 3 by percentage gain.
