4. Identity Protection
- Use Only Trusted Computers and Devices
Avoid using public devices to access your account, as they may be infected with viruses or malware that pose a risk.
- Lock Your Computers and Devices When Not in Use
Require a password, PIN, fingerprint, or other identification method to access your PC, tablet, or mobile device.
- Keep Your Computers and Devices Updated
Regularly update or patch your software to address security issues. Set your devices to receive automatic updates whenever possible to minimize exposure to attacks.
- Use Anti-virus and Anti-malware Software
Anti-virus software protects your system from viruses, malware, spyware, and Trojan horse programs that can intercept and relay information without your consent. Enable automatic updates to stay protected from the latest threats.
- Disable File and Printer Sharing
When not connected to a trusted private network, disable file and printer sharing to prevent unintended access to your folders and files.
- Encrypt Your Data
Encrypt data on your portable PCs and mobile devices to protect it in case of loss or theft.
- Use a Hardware Firewall and/or a Personal Software Firewall
A firewall controls information flow between your device and a network or the Internet, ensuring only desired traffic is permitted. A properly configured hardware firewall can hide devices, making it harder for intruders to access them.
- Use Mobile Security Software on Your Mobile Device
Install mobile security software to protect against viruses, malware, and spyware, and to enable remote management features, such as locating a lost device via GPS or deleting data in case of theft.
- Be Smart about the Mobile Apps You Install
Install applications from trusted sources, review access permissions, and check the developer’s privacy policy before using the software.
- Verify Email Sources and Use Spam Email Filtering Software
Be cautious with emails, especially from unknown sources or those conveying urgency or requesting link clicks. Verify suspicious emails by directly visiting the organization’s website or contacting them through official channels. Legitimate businesses will not request sensitive information like usernames, passwords, or account details via email. Use spam filtering in your email client or purchase anti-spam software.
- Never Download or Open Email Attachments from Unknown Sources
Opening unsolicited email attachments is a common way viruses and malware are delivered. Always confirm the source and scan attachments for viruses before downloading.
- Use Social Media Responsibly
Be mindful of what you share on social media, as it may become public and could be used by criminals. Avoid sharing sensitive details like your address, workplace, school, or current location. Do not share information used for security questions, such as those for password resets. Regularly review your social media privacy settings.
