Indian automakers claim ethanol fuel reduces mileage but is safe, amid driver complaints.
India's Ethanol Fuel Roll-Out
Impact on Vehicle Mileage: The introduction of E20 fuel, which contains 20% ethanol, is expected to reduce vehicle mileage by 2%-4%. This information was provided by P.K. Banerjee, executive director of the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), who emphasized that while mileage may decrease, the fuel is safe for use.
Government Initiative: The rollout of E20 fuel aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's clean energy goals, with a target set for 2025. However, the transition has led to concerns among drivers, particularly regarding the performance of older vehicles.
Industry Response and Consumer Concerns
Automakers' Assurance: Banerjee reassured the public that millions of vehicles have been operating on E20 without any reported breakdowns or engine failures. He also stated that any arising issues would be covered by warranty and insurance claims.
Misinformation on Fuel Efficiency: Banerjee refuted claims of a 50% drop in fuel efficiency as unfounded, citing scientific studies that indicate a more modest decrease. However, C.V. Raman from Maruti Suzuki noted that real-world driving conditions could lead to greater variations in mileage.
Transition Challenges
Removal of Older Fuel Blends: The older fuel blends, E5 and E10, which were more compatible with older vehicles, have been largely phased out from India's 90,000 fuel stations, leaving E20 as the sole option for consumers.
Public Reaction and Legal Action: The transition has sparked significant public concern, with motorists expressing their frustrations on social media. The mixed messages from automakers regarding the compatibility of E20 with older vehicles have further fueled consumer anger. A public interest litigation challenging this move is set to be heard in the Supreme Court.
