Market Overview
On Tuesday morning, the three major U.S. index futures showed mixed results. As of the latest update, Dow futures rose by 0.20%, while Nasdaq futures fell by 1.20% and S&P futures dropped by 0.61%.
Oil and Tech Stocks
WTI crude oil futures saw a significant increase, rising over 4%. However, major tech stocks experienced declines in pre-market trading, with Oracle down nearly 7%, AMD down nearly 6%, and Broadcom down nearly 5%.
In the Chinese concept stocks sector, Xpeng Motors fell over 4%, TSMC dropped more than 3%, and Alibaba and NIO both declined over 2%. Corning, a player in the optical communication sector, saw its stock drop over 10% in pre-market trading.
General Motors Performance
General Motors (GM) stock rose over 5% in pre-market trading, currently up 1.59%. The company reported Q1 revenue of $43.62 billion, slightly above market expectations of $43 billion, with adjusted earnings per share of $3.70, surpassing the expected $2.60.
Palantir's Setback
Palantir Technologies (PLTR) faced challenges as the German military publicly rejected collaboration, indicating a lack of interest in awarding contracts to the U.S. data analytics and defense software company. A senior German officer stated that access to national databases by corporate personnel is currently unimaginable.
Google and Defense Contracts
Google (GOOG) has joined other tech companies in signing a confidential AI cooperation agreement with the U.S. Department of Defense. This agreement allows the use of Google's AI models for various government purposes, although it restricts the use of AI for domestic surveillance or autonomous weapons without human oversight.
Barclays' Financial Exposure
Barclays Bank (BCS) disclosed a structural financing exposure of £66 billion (approximately $89.2 billion) to non-bank institutions, becoming the latest bank to reveal risks in this area. The bank's first-quarter earnings met market expectations, but it recorded a £200 million impairment loss related to Market Financial Solutions Ltd. and Tricolor Holdings.
European Short-Debt Strategy
In response to recent sell-offs in European short-term government bonds, major asset management firms, including JPMorgan and BlackRock, are increasing their positions to lock in current yields. The market anticipates that the European Central Bank (ECB) may be forced to raise interest rates significantly due to inflation pressures from the ongoing Middle East conflict.
AI and Market Valuations
Goldman Sachs reported that approximately 75% of the S&P 500's equity value is derived from terminal value, the highest level in 25 years. A 1% decrease in long-term growth assumptions could lead to a 15% drop in enterprise value for S&P constituents, with high-growth stocks facing an even larger impact.
Upcoming Market Events
April 29 will be a significant trading day with three major events: the Senate Banking Committee's vote on Powell's successor, the FOMC's interest rate statement, and Q1 earnings reports from major tech companies like Microsoft, Alphabet, Meta, and Amazon. The market is currently pricing in a near 100% probability of no rate change.
As the market anticipates these events, any hawkish signals from the Fed or cracks in the earnings reports could lead to significant volatility.
