Screening Filters

1. Market Cap ≥ $50,000,000,000

   • Purpose: Focus on very large, established companies.
   • Rationale: Large-cap stocks tend to have:
     • Heavy institutional following
     • Deep order books and higher trading activity
       Both contribute to narrower bid-ask spreads. Market makers are more willing to quote tight spreads when there is constant, predictable flow.

2. Price between $20 and $150

   • Purpose: Avoid extremely low-priced and very high-priced stocks.
   • Rationale:
     • Very low-priced stocks (e.g., under $5–10) often have wider spreads in both cents and percentage terms, due to lower liquidity and higher tick-size impact.
     • Extremely high-priced stocks can have larger absolute spreads (even if the percentage is small), which may not be ideal for users sensitive to per-share execution costs.
     • The $20–$150 band tends to capture actively traded, institutionally popular names where spreads are usually quite competitive.

3. Relative Volume ≥ 1.2

   • Purpose: Select stocks currently trading at higher-than-normal activity.
   • Rationale: Relative volume > 1.0 means today’s volume is above the stock’s usual average. A threshold of 1.2 targets names with:
     • Elevated current liquidity
     • More active order books during the current period
       This typically supports tighter, more competitive bid-ask quoting intraday.

4. Monthly Average Dollar Volume ≥ $8,000,000

   • Purpose: Ensure consistently high trading liquidity in dollar terms.
   • Rationale:
     • Dollar volume (price × shares traded) captures both price level and share turnover.
     • Higher dollar volume means more capital changing hands regularly, which:
       • Attracts more market makers and arbitrageurs
       • Deepens order books
         This is one of the best practical proxies for tight spreads.

5. Index Component: S&P 500 (GSPC)

   • Purpose: Limit results to S&P 500 constituents.
   • Rationale:
     • S&P 500 stocks are among the most liquid names in the U.S. market.
     • They are held and traded by ETFs, mutual funds, and derivatives traders, generating constant flows.
     • They typically benefit from:
       • Multiple active market makers
       • Robust competition in quoting
         which is strongly associated with very tight bid-ask spreads.

6. Exchange: NYSE (XNYS), NASDAQ (XNAS), AMEX (XASE)

   • Purpose: Restrict to major U.S. exchanges.
   • Rationale:
     • These exchanges host the largest, most actively traded U.S. equities.
     • They offer high-quality market structure and strong competition among liquidity providers.
     • Stocks listed here generally have:
       • Better transparency
       • Stronger trading infrastructure
         Both support narrower and more stable spreads compared with less prominent venues.

Why Results Match:

• Tight bid-ask spreads are not directly screenable, so the filters use strong liquidity proxies: large market cap, high dollar volume, and index membership.
• S&P 500 large-cap names on major U.S. exchanges are among the most liquid stocks globally, where intense competition among market participants leads to very tight spreads.
• Volume-based filters (relative volume and monthly dollar volume) ensure the stocks are not just theoretically liquid, but are currently and consistently trading actively, which is when spreads are actually tight in practice.
• The price range avoids low-priced, more volatile, and structurally wider-spread names, focusing on the more “institutional-quality” part of the market where execution costs (spreads) are generally minimized.
