Screening Filters

1. Price: 20–80 USD

   • Purpose: Find underlyings whose options are likely affordable with a ~$90 account and still avoid low‑quality penny stocks.
   • Rationale:
     • Very high-priced stocks (e.g., $300–$500) often have more expensive options, making it harder to structure defined-risk spreads (verticals, iron condors) for under $90 total.
     • Very low-priced stocks (<$20) can have poor liquidity and wider option spreads, which is not ideal for precise spread strategies.
     • The $20–$80 range balances: reasonably priced underlyings + typically manageable option premiums for 1-lot spreads.

2. Monthly Average Dollar Volume ≥ 5,000,000 USD

   • Purpose: Ensure the underlying stock is actively traded and liquid.
   • Rationale:
     • High dollar volume means many shares are trading with meaningful capital behind them.
     • Liquid stocks usually translate into tighter bid–ask spreads in the options, which is crucial when trading:
       • Vertical spreads (bull call, bear put)
       • Iron condors
       • Cash-secured puts
     • Tight spreads reduce slippage, which matters a lot when your entire trade size is around $90.

3. Exchange: XNYS (NYSE) and XNAS (NASDAQ)

   • Purpose: Limit results to major U.S. exchanges with robust options markets.

       • Known for deep, liquid options markets
     • Those qualities help with:

       • Having plenty of strike choices to build precise verticals and iron condors around your price targets.

5. is_optionable: True

   • Purpose: Ensure every stock returned actually has listed options.
   • Rationale:
     • You specifically want to execute:
       • Vertical spreads (calls/puts)
       • Iron condors
       • Cash-secured puts
     • All of these require liquid listed options; this filter guarantees you’re only seeing underlyings where those strategies are even possible.

6. Option IV Rank: 50–80

   • Purpose: Target stocks where implied volatility (IV) is moderately to significantly elevated relative to their own past.
   • Rationale:
     • IV rank of 50–80 means current IV is above average but not at an extreme:
       • Good for income/credit strategies like iron condors or short vertical spreads:
         • Higher IV → richer premiums → more credit received per contract.
       • Still avoids the highest, most unstable volatility levels (90–100 IV rank), where gap risk and wild moves can overwhelm your defined risk.
     • Even for debit spreads (bull call / bear put), this range still offers active options markets and can be suitable if you structure them thoughtfully and keep position size within your $90.
