Norway's Northern Lights CCS Initiative Begins Operations with Initial CO2 Injection
Start of Operations: Norway's Northern Lights carbon capture and storage (CCS) project has begun operations with the first volumes of CO2 injected and stored by Shell, Equinor, and TotalEnergies.
Storage Details: The CO2 is being stored 2,600 meters below the seabed, marking a significant milestone for the CCS industry, as stated by Equinor's CEO Anders Opedal.
Project Goals: The Longship project aims to commercialize CCS to reduce CO2 emissions from sectors that are difficult to decarbonize, with initial CO2 sourced from the Brevik cement factory.
Future Investments: The first phase can inject 37.5 million metric tons of CO2 over 25 years, and the partners have committed an additional 7.5 billion crowns for a second phase targeting 3.5 million tons per year.
