Indian State Grants Contracts for 2,400 MW Coal Plants to Adani and Torrent Power

New Power Projects in Madhya Pradesh

• Adani Power and Torrent Power Contracts: Adani Power and Torrent Power have secured contracts to establish a total of 2,400 megawatts (MW) of coal power plants in Madhya Pradesh, India.
• Torrent Power's Investment: Torrent Power will develop a new coal-based power plant with a capacity of 1,600 MW, requiring an investment of 220 billion rupees (approximately $2.51 billion).
• Adani Power's Contribution: Adani Power will contribute by supplying power from an 800 MW thermal power plant, with an investment of 105 billion rupees (around $1.20 billion). This marks Adani's fourth significant power supply order in the past year.

Government's Energy Goals

• Coal Power Capacity Increase: The Indian government, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, aims to boost coal-based power capacity by 80 gigawatts (GW), raising the total to over 290 GW by 2032.
• Objective for Reliable Supply: This expansion is intended to ensure a reliable, round-the-clock power supply, reflecting a strategic move to enhance energy security in the region.
