US Treasury sanctions notorious multi-billion Myanmar crime syndicate
U.S. Sanctions on Karen National Army: The U.S. Treasury has imposed sanctions on the Karen National Army (KNA) for its involvement in cyber scams and human trafficking, which have defrauded American citizens of billions of dollars. The KNA operates along the Thai-Burmese border and is accused of profiting from these crimes while abusing workers trafficked into their operations.
Collaboration with Military and Previous Sanctions: The KNA, previously known as the Karen Border Guard Force, has continued to collaborate with the Burmese military despite rebranding. Its leaders, including Saw Chit Thu and his sons, have already faced sanctions from the UK and EU for their roles in supporting military operations and facilitating scam activities.
